Round 1
Analysis
The early picks went like most drafts I've seen and participated -- Running Backs, Running Backs, Running Backs. Jamal Lewis at #8 will be a steal after coming off a 2,000 yd season if all his legal problems are cleared up come September. Domanick Davis at #9 seems a bit early but he proved the final 5 weeks of the 2003 season that he's a force both running and receiving. Our esteemed leader, Brian Kreklau, was one of the few early surprises -- not that he took Marvin Harrison at the #12 spot to end Round one ...

2.13 Brian Kreklau Torry Holt, WR, St Louis
2.14 Dave Meyer Kevan Barlow, RB, San Francisco

Round 2
Analysis
... but the fact he took Torry Holt and back-to-back WR selections. Going against conventional wisdom either makes you a bonafide genius or downright crazy! Mike Koons solidified his run for "Minnesota Vikings Fan-Club President" by getting Daunte Culpepper in Round 2 after selecting Randy Moss in Round One. Ned Brown took the first early leap by taking Marshall Faulk at #20 -- he's certainly a fantasy stud when healthy, but hasn't played a full 16-game schedule since 1999. I like Chris Ratel's "potential" (the infamous "P" word) with Priest Holmes and Michael Vick for his first two picks -- both can put up big big games. In what could be an interesting turn, just five of the 12 participants went with 2 RB's to start their selections and four QB's were grabbed up by the end of the round.

Round 3
Analysis
After four signal-callers went in Round 2, just one was taken in Round 3 (Matt Hasselbeck, Dave Meyer). 23 of the first 36 picks (64%) have been running backs, including Jim Klopp and yours-truly who have gone with three RBs with the first 3 picks. Every team finished Round 3 with at least one back ... well, except one squad. Koons continued his non-RB run by picking up WR Eric Moulds with the #34 selection ... it will be interesting to see where he heads later-on to fill the required 4 RB slots. Chris Ratel snatched up Stephen Davis at #26, but his carries could dwindle with DeShaun Foster on the roster and his propensity for injury the last few years. Josh Smith's Hines Ward choice at #27 has his team looking incredibly balanced (A. Green, McNabb).

4.37 Brian Kreklau TJ Duckett, RB, Atlanta
4.38 Dave Meyer Laveranues Coles, WR, Washington
4.39 Mike Koons Santana Moss, WR, NY Jets

4.41 Dawn Santos Aaron Brooks, QB, New Orleans
4.42 Steve Preo Todd Heap, TE, Baltimore
4.43 Troy Rex Charlie Garner, RB, Tampa Bay
4.44 Ned Brown Anquan Boldin, WR, Arizona
4.45 Carl Miller Chris Brown, RB, Tennessee
4.46 Josh Smith Tony Gonzalez, TE, Kansas City
4.47 Chris Ratel Darrell Jackson, WR, Seattle
4.48 Mike Nagy Steve McNair, QB, Tennessee

Round 4
Analysis
Koons continued to throw caution to the wind and went with his third WR among his top 4 picks, and still no RB in sight. The first tight ends went off the board as Todd Heap (Preo) and Tony Gonzalez (Smith) didn't make it thru the round. Running backs are quickly disappearing with just 3 being picked in Round 4, including a surprising early selection by Carl Miller of Chris Brown, who's been averaging a 5th round pick at best in most mock drafts. Mike Nagy continues to quietly put together a solid core with his pick of Steve McNair at the end of the round -- he goes along with his previous picks of Tomlinson, Travis Henry and Chad Johnson.

Round 5
Analysis
Here's the usual "fill-in" round with team owners figuring out what main position (WR, RB, QB) they might have overlooked in the excitement of their first four picks. Wide Receivers went early and often with four of the first six selections in Round 5 being wideouts.  Ratel's selection of Steve Smith could be an absolute steal, especially as M. Muhammad continues to have the injury bug (broken finger) bite him during training camp -- Smith could have a monster year with a talented Carolina squad. I was happy to find Peerless Price still around in this round as a healthy Michael Vick pumps Price's value high. And the "Koons RB Watch" continues -- he went with high-scoring Trent Green in Round 5.

6.61 Brian Kreklau Quentin Griffin, RB, Denver
6.62 Dave Meyer Jimmy Smith, WR, Jacksonville
6.63 Mike Koons Charles Rogers, WR, Detroit

6.69 Carl Miller Isaac Bruce, WR, St Louis
6.70 Josh Smith Donte Stallworth, WR, New Orleans
6.71 Chris Ratel Plaxico Burress, WR, Pittsburgh
6.72 Mike Nagy Amani Toomer, WR, NY Giants

Round 6
Analysis
The first DEF/ST is spotted with Klopp's selection of the Super Bowl champion New England Patriots -- Defenses' and kickers are usually HIGHLY erratic year-to-year for points so this selection seems to be a very large leap. Koons continued his non-RB run (so to speak) through Round 6 with a pick of WR Charles Rogers, but it was a great pick. Here's a guy many may be forgetting about due to being limited to just 5 games last year -- but he scored three times in that short time span and the Lions offense seems to be improved for '04. Kudos again to Ratel with his pick of Burress ... hard to believe he won't return to his 2002 form (1,325yds, 7 TD's) compared to last year's stats (860yds, 4 TD's). Chris' squad might be the early front-runner for best draft so far.

7.73 Mike Nagy Eddie George, RB, Dallas
7.74 Chris Ratel Jerry Porter, WR, Oakland
7.75 Josh Smith De'Shaun Foster, RB, Carolina
7.76 Carl Miller Marty Booker, WR, Chicago
7.77 Ned Brown Keenan McCardell, WR, Tampa Bay
7.78 Troy Rex Tom Brady, QB, New England
7.79 Steve Preo Jeff Garica, QB, Cleveland
7.80 Dawn Santos Ashley Lelie, WR, Denver
7.81 Jim Klopp Jake Plummer, QB, Denver
7.82 Mike Koons Julius Jones, RB, Dallas
7.83 Dave Meyer Rod Smith, WR, Denver
7.84 Brian Kreklau Reggie Wayne, WR, Indianapolis

Round 7
Analysis
Everyone sit down and take a breath ... there's has been a Running Back sighting on the Koons squad! Julius Jones from the Cowboys was selected by Mike, but it might be too little too late for that position. J. Jones will be good, but will need a major injury or meltdown of Eddie George to see any significant time this season.  Backup RB's were also found this round with De'Shaun Foster (Josh Smith) on the heels of Stephen Davis in Carolina. Troy Rex followed up a strong Round 6 selection of up-n-coming Chad Pennington with Tom Brady in Round 7 ... that's a great combo at the QB position. Kreklau continued to solidify a tremendous WR group by stealing Reggie Wayne at the end of Round 7 ...

8.85 Brian Kreklau Larry Fitzgerald, WR, Arizona
8.86 Dave Meyer Keyshawn Johnson, WR, Dallas
8.87 Mike Koons Marcel Shipp, RB, Arizona
8.88 Jim Klopp Mike Vanderjagt, K, Indianapolis
8.89 Dawn Santos Emmitt Smith, RB, Arizona
8.90 Steve Preo Mike Alstott, RB, Tampa Bay
8.91 Troy Rex Baltimore Ravens, DEF/ST
8.92 Ned Brown Boo Williams, TE, New Orleans
8.93 Carl Miller Travis Minor, RB, Miami
8.94 Josh Smith Justin Fargas, RB, Oakland
8.95 Chris Ratel Willis McGahee, RB, Buffalo
8.96 Mike Nagy Joey Harrington, QB, Detroit

Steve Preo's
Round 8
Analysis
... and then going with Larry Fitzgerald to start Round 8.
Fitzgerald's value was already climbing, but as the availability of Anquan Boldin in 2004 continues to be a mystery, he could be in for a huge year in Arizona. Koons RB position was already thin, but his pick of injured Marcel Shipp (broken left fibula, dislocated left ankle) hurts his squad even more. Just past the half-way mark had most owners filling in open spots, including the first kicker (Vanderjagt, Klopp) and another defense (Ravens, TRex). Unless you can guarantee me a Kicker or DEF/ST will be a huge scoring machine like the Buccanneers were a couple years back, taking either position before your final 3-4 rounds is questionable.

9.97 Mike Nagy Philadelphia Eagles, DEF/ST
9.98 Chris Ratel Carolina Panthers, DEF/ST
9.99 Josh Smith David Carr, QB, Houston
9.100 Carl Miller Eddie Kennison, WR, Kansas City
9.101 Ned Brown Brad Johnson, QB, Tampa Bay
9.102 Troy Rex Drew Bennett, WR, Tennessee
9.103 Steve Preo Byron Leftwich, QB, Jacksonville
9.104 Dawn Santos Brandon Lloyd, WR, San Francisco
9.105 Jim Klopp Donald Driver, WR, Green Bay
9.106 Mike Koons Alge Crumpler, TE, Atlanta
9.107 Dave Meyer Tyrone Wheatley, RB, Oakland
9.108 Brian Kreklau Josh McCown, QB, Arizona

Round 9
Analysis
More defenses, more QB's littered the Round 9 landscape. Dawn Santos followed up a sleeper pick of Emmitt Smith in Round 8 (with Shipp out, Emmitt will have to be the Cards running attack) with another possible steal in Round 9 ... Brandon Lloyd (WR, SF). Like the Arizona Cardinals, the 49ers offense will be very limited and might not score a ton -- but SOMEONE has to catch some passes and Lloyd's final two games of the 2003 season could be a springboard to a strong '04 campaign.

10.109 Brian Kreklau Steven Jackson, RB, St Louis
