Monday Morning QB

There is plenty to talk about this week, and a lot of it I'd like to say that I mentioned last week as things to keep an eye on for the weekend.  It was a very surprising day of football and a lot of new decisions will have to be made in terms of how you look at certain teams.

No matter how close the score, the Bills dominated the Jets.  The Bills defense lived up to its top five defensive ranking, and put enough points on the board offensively to make it hold up.  And, as expected by many, Willis McGahee is proving to be a very good NFL back and Travis Henry may as well lean back, take his shoes off, and sit a spell.  His hope of playing will require an injury to Willis.  As I watched the game, I listened to the announcers say again and again that the Bills players did not think of their team as a 2-5 team.  Initially I thought it was just the same hype that everyone on a lousy team says, but this time it appeared to be true.  I said last week that I felt the line was an anomaly and that three points looked very small when reviewing the records, stats, etc.  A lot of gamblers thought so as well, but the bookies appeared to have it right after all.

The major item I took out of this game is that Chad Pennington has been making mistakes this year in critical games and game situations.  In both losses this year, you can look directly at a mistake made by Pennington that led to points by the opponents, or stopped a promising drive by the Jets.  This is a situation that ought to be monitored as the season progresses, and may impact what I select.

I live in Illinois and therefore I am stuck with hearing about the Bears all season long.  This year the talk has all been about how bad they are.  Last week I mentioned that I thought that Krenzel had looked OK as an NFL QB in the game against SF.  This week, despite the 38% completion rate, and the two lost fumbles, he made enough of the right plays at the right time to win the game for the Bears.  The Giants, on the other hand, gave the game away.  What needs to be determine, however, is if the 7 sacks that Warner had were his fault, or the fault of the line, or the Bears defense.  If the Giants cannot keep a team like the Bears off their QB, then they are in a lot of trouble.

Pittsburgh has just jumped to the top of the list as the best team in the NFL.  The game was taken out of the hands of Roethlisberger as the Steelers ran 56 times for 252 yards.  They only passed 18 times, and connected on 11.  I don't know the time of possession differential, but the Eagles ran only 33 plays, while the Steelers ran more than 70.  It was a typical Steeler (and Jerome Bettis) kind of game, and they played it very well.  The lines this week ought to be interesting. But one obstacle remains, can a rookie QB win the Super Bowl?  He will have to keep up this level of play for a long time yet this year, and I wonder if the rookie can stay strong, never having played some many games before.  If they make it that far, it'll be 20 games, plus pre-season.  They better have a back-up in the wings to give the kid a breather.

San Diego is proving to be more than a one-dimensional team.  L. Tomlinson has one of his worst days as a pro and they still won easily.  Drew Brees threw for 4 TD's and had a very good statistical day.  The race in the west should be interesting, and there are a lot of teams in the AFC that you just can't figure out.  Are the Chiefs dead, or not?  Can the Jets win a big game, or can they only beat the bottom feeders?  What about the Raiders, Titans, Ravens and Jags?  No teams are demonstrating anything except the Steelers and Pats, and at this point you ought to just have the two teams play each other now for the championship and save everybody the time and aggravation.

That's it for looking back at last weekend.  It seems much clearer now than it did last Friday, but after the games I saw, not much clearer.
