Monday Morning QB

There were a lot of things that happened this past weekend in the NFL, and some of them were discussed here last week. Certain teams, like the Steelers and the Patriots, showed their championship caliber, while other teams, like the Bills and Jets and Giants, showed just how mediocre the league can be when these teams are considered good.

Don't get me wrong, the record of the Bills does not indicate anything special happening there in Buffalo, but all we've heard the past week is that the Bills are better than their record, and that their defense is very solid. This information was based on the Bills performances against teams like the Jets and the Cardinals- neither of them are offensive powerhouses. The Bills, in fact, with Bledsoe at QB and an average receiving corps at best, are not very good. They will win a few more games against the weaker teams, and may even beat a quality team down the stretch, but they are biding their time for next year. Get rid of Bledsoe next year, which is already in the plans, give McGahee the ball often, and trade a marketable back like Travis Henry for a decent wide receiver, and pick up some offensive linemen in the draft. Then they may be a decent team.

It comes as no surprise to me that Warner is out as the QB for the Giants. His run of good play came to an end a couple of weeks ago, actually, and the Giant fans have been screaming for Manning. The mantra goes something like "if Roethlisberger can do so well in Pittsburgh as a rookie, why can't Manning do as well in NY when we are paying him so much more to sit on the bench?" A ridiculous way to think about it, but NY fans have not been noted for their lines of reasoning. I should know, I'm from NY and root for both the Giants and the Jets. Pity me.

As for the younger Manning, it remains to been seen if he can be another Ben R., or if throwing him to the NFC wolves will wear him down. Pedigree notwithstanding, it's a tough job for anyone.
Fortunately for him the Giants offense is not very complicated, but it is made more difficult by the fact they have no deep threat. We shall see, and I'll hope for the best.

The Patriots, on the other hand, continue to march towards a date with the Steelers for the AFC title.
There is nothing spectacular about the way they play, except they do everything well. Well enough to win. I continue to like their chances.

I deliberately haven't talked about Michael Vick the last week or so because I beat him up all the earlier weeks. While his play individually still hasn't been up to expectations, how can anyone be upset with the Falcon's record. All we ask of players is to win, usually, unless we have them on our FF team. His numbers will improve as time goes on, and let's see if this continues to translate into wins for the team.

That's it for this week. See you later...
