There are a lot of very big lines this week.  As the season enters the stretch run the gamblers are beginning to load up on the favorites as the also-rans begin taking the rest of the season off.  If there is an individual player or two that has some personal milestones to reach they may play hard for a little while, but with no real heart.  What can you expect from professional sports these days?  I don't believe that very many play for the love of the game anymore- its all about the money and endorsements.  If their team isn't making it to the play-offs, they aren't going to risk getting hurt.  To them its a job, not a sport.

If you look at the lines, you'll see the largest spreads in the AFC where there are a few teams at the top, and a lot of teams already out of the running.  In the NFC, where there are still quite a few play-off positions up for grabs, the lines are tighter as we expect harder fought contests.

The biggest move of the week cam from the SF/Arizona game.  The line doubled from 3.5 to 7 points in favor of the Cardinals.  Arizona this week is at home and will start J. McCown this week in place of the injured Navarre (who started his first game in the NFL last week and was horrendous), and in front of Shaun King, who had also started 2 games (and also played poorly).  Larry Croom will start at RB, and although he didn't gain a lot of yards last week, the team believes he is on the verge of breaking out.  Who better to do that against than SF?  The SF team will start K. Dorsey and he has not impressed this year while throwing 5 ints with no TD's.  Additionally they will be without Barlowe again at running back and will start Maurice Hicks, who has a total of 144 yards this season and is usually on the practice squad.  Add all that up and does it amount to 7 points in the spread.  I think its simply that bettors like McCown at QB in Arizona and don't think he ever should have been benched.  And SF is the only team already eliminated from the play-offs.

The line in the NY Jets/Pittsburgh game is slowly moving up in 1/2 point increments this week.  It started at 5 and is now at 6.  Its hard to believe that the Steelers are not at least a one TD favorite.  Pittsburgh stumbled a bit last week, although they still won.  It had to happen sooner or later, but they got away with it.  The bettors also don't seem to think that the Steelers losing Burress this week is much of an impact.  The Jets, though, do sport a tough defense and that may keep the line down a bit.  But, and this is a big but, the Jets have a recent history of stinking up the big games.  And this one is a big one.

Dallas' showing last week seems to be fueling the increase in their line from 6 to 7.5 against New Orleans at home.  The over/under total is also moving slowly upward.  Against Seattle, the Cowboys displayed some offensive abilities, and the bookies must be comparing the Saints defense to the Seahawks.  The Cowboys should be able to score on this defense, and the Dallas "D" isn't that bad to begin with.  Although I hate to give up more than a TD if I was Cowboy faithful.

In my opinion, the most unusual line of the week comes in the over/under for the Oakland/Atlanta game.  A point total of 46 is pretty high, and it all depends on which Oakland and Atlanta teams will show up.  Will Atlanta play this week like they did last week, or will the other team show up?  Will Kerry Collins thrown 5 TD's or 5 INTs?  They must be betting the scoring teams will show up.

Nothing else much happening with the lines.  Good luck this week.
